Quick Review of “The Hurt Locker”
A visceral, gripping and totally absorbing film that follows one man’s life on the front line of bomb disposal, The Hurt Locker will surely take out an Academy Award nomination for Best Director next February. Director Kathryn Bigalow puts you right in the adrenaline rush zone along with the remarkable Jeremy Ranner playing the man who cant seem to get enough.
Following a quote that “war is a drug” Bigalow works brilliantly and very very hard, manipulating the viewer with 133 minutes of handheld, nail-biting front-line terror. After one of the most intense opening sequences in recent movie history - we learn what the stakes are in the job of bomb-disposal on the litter filled streets of Baghdad, and we then invest in the casual boyish charm that Renner brings to the lead character - Sargeant James. As the clock counts down on his tour of duty, we wonder just how long he - and we - are to survive, but like him we get off on the thrill of it all. This is a psychological thriller that replicates the intensity of actually playing the game yourself.
There’s no wider message here about politics and war, and there’s no glorification or heroics. When James finally comes home and is confronted with the banal realities of shopping for breakfast cereal or chopping carrots - we know where he belongs. The drug is too strong.
Barry Ackroyd’s multiple camera cinematography and the film’s editing from Chris Innes and Bob Murawski are superb - and are also Oscar-worthy.
You wont see a more intense war-film than this.
